Reasons To Hire A Coach

Working with a coach is an important commitment. What are some of the reasons people are partnering with a coach today? I will borrow from, paraphrase and expand upon CoachU's excellent list of reasons:1

To Make Significant Changes

A coach is uniquely trained to support people in making fundamental and permanent change in all areas of life, business, career, relationships and quality of life.

To Better Deal With Uncertainty

Flatter, leaner organizational structures mean that there is less day-to-day direction from the top. Individuals are expected to form networks within and outside their organizations, master the skills of creative collaboration, respond to frequently changing priorities and assume personal responsibility for setting their own direction. A coach can help you develop effective change-management strategies.

To Make Better Decisions

As the pace of life increases, so have the multitude of choices available. By partnering with a coach you can begin to make sense of the options that are available today and make better decisions.

To Set Better Goals

One of my favorite ways to describe what I do (as a coach) is paraphrased from something Stephen Covey said: Coaching is: making sure the ladder of success you are climbing is leaned against the right building — and helping you climb it faster, more effectively and happily than you might by yourself. You will set better goals by exploring who you are, and choosing the best path for you. (italicized text added).

To Reach Goals Faster

This is the second half of the success ladder comparison mentioned just previously. A coach provides, among other things, proven strategies and unwavering support.

To Become More Successful Financially

The one asset that everyone has is their ability to earn. This asset either appreciates or depreciates over time. A coach can help you understand the gifts and abilities you have and the ways in which you can maximize your earning ability (and to identify and eliminate any negative financial habits which might be holding you back).

To Get Ahead Professionally

Responsibility for advancement professionally increasingly rests with the individual. As our society transforms itself to one based on information and globalization increases, the ability for individuals to learn and grow becomes more and more important. A coach can help you realize your true strengths and passions and developing them to maximize your potential.

To Deal With The Influence of Technology

The Internet is rapidly becoming the hub of the global marketplace and understanding of, and proficiency with, information and its technologies is increasingly important. With the growth of technology people are challenged to clearly see their place in an organization and/or society in general. A coach can help you see the effects of the world we are living in and help you slow down enough to get to the source of what is holding you back from having the life you really want.

To Have A Collaborative Partner

When you have someone to toss ideas around with, someone who understands the creative process, someone who expands your thinking you end up with synergy. Synergy is generally defined as the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. And it can make a tremendous difference in how you identify and overcome problems and obstacles and choose and achieve goals.

To Improve Relationships

It has been said that the quality of one's life is equal to the quality of their relationships. Your relationship with yourself and others will make all the difference in your happiness, achievement (and just about every aspect of your quality of life). A coach can help you understand how you relate with yourself and others and how to have the best relationships possible.

To Make A Bigger Impact On The World

People tend to be driven to make a mark on their world. Many people are working coaches to identify their unique strengths and resources and a way to use these to make a local or global difference, without the traditionally high emotional or physical cost that (often) comes with leadership.

To Be A Better Leader

Reshaped organizations will have fewer leaders at the top than traditional vertical organizational structures, and given the rapidity of change, those at the top will be will incapable of being (the traditional) repositories of organizational knowledge. In the new era, leadership will emerge throughout the organization, regardless of job title or status, and individuals will (need to) have relationships with "leader coaches" who will sponsor them in their development of new knowledge and a sense of vision.

To Simplify Their Lives

You really can have it all and yet simplify your life at the same time. A coach uses coaching models and assessments to help people simplify yet enrich their lives at the same time.

To Reduce Stress

Stress seems to be a part of our modern world and it is exacting a high cost on happiness and fulfillment. Many seek the help of a coach to understand the sources of, and reduce the, stress they feel in their lives. The excellent news is that stress is something we create and thus is something we can reduce (and even eliminate!).

To Address An Altered Reality of Employment

Contract work, outsourcing, temporary employment, telecommuting and virtual organizations are but a few of changes in the way people are redefining employment, as organizations are downsizing and restructuring to be more competitive. The workforce of the twenty-first century will not expect to have a life-long relationship based on dependency with one employer. Instead, people will have a series of short-term relationships throughout their careers in which they contribute their knowledge and expertise to particular business needs. They will operate more like business owners whose customer is the corporation. A coach can help you make the most of your talents and abilities to maximize the performance of your "professional services corporation."

To Keep Up With The Speed Of Life

Never has the pace been more rapid than it is in today's marketplace. Organizations must respond quickly and be more innovative to survive, let alone have a competitive advantage. This requires a flexible, adaptable workforce. Corporations simply do not have the reserves to tolerate anything less. A coach can help develop a clear success strategy to keep your competitive advantage.
